This week’s featured artist is Leah Anastasakis of Broadview Heights, who sells under the name LeahAnaDesigns on Etsy.
What is your first memory of your craft? Did someone teach you, or did you learn on your own?
In 8th grade art class I made my first linoleum block cut and learned how to print it using a wooden spoon. My teacher was Ms. Rose and I give her credit for turning me on to crafting in general. I am mostly self taught but have taken a few classes here and there and have a studio art minor from Kent State University.
What is it that draws you to your craft material?
The quality of color in a bead is what usually captures my attention immediately. If I could just carry beads around in my pocket it would make me happy, as I don’t wear that much jewelry, but then no one else would see them and it might make me feel like I have serious issues or something
Also, the process of carving a piece of wood or linoleum is the part of printmaking I like best. It is a good feeling to see your design take shape.
How would you describe the style of your work? Does it reflect your personal style?
The style of my work is simple, usually monocromatic, no fuss or frills.
What are your inspirations? How are they expressed in your work?
I love ribbons and design on fabric and wrapping paper, and that can usually be seen in my prints. The designs are very flowing and curly like a ribbon might be.
Do you have an all-time favorite creation? What about it makes it your favorite?
I have 3 blue and black striped monotype prints on black paper that rock! I consider selling them all the time but I don’t think I could let them go. I did a whole series of these a while ago and they came out better than I could have imagined.
When did you realize that this was more than a hobby?
I have always wanted to own a craft shop and sell my work. My artwork has always made me happy, so it was never a question that I would be an artist/crafter in some form or another.
Describe your workspace.
My work space is in progress. When my husband and I recently bought a house my one criteria was that there be a room, corner, niche — whatever — that would be just for my creating. I am currently fixing up one of the extra bedrooms to be this space.
What is your favorite task related to your work? Your least favorite?
I love finishing a piece. Being able to see the final product and then wear it or hang it for other people to see is the best. I hate when I make a mistake and feel like I have wasted my time.
Do you have artistic talents in other areas?
I’m kind of a “jack-of-all-crafts.” I am addicted to learning about different art forms so I end up knowing a little bit about a lot of areas.
Tell us something about you that we might be surprised to hear.
I used to have hot pink hair, an eyebrow ring, and a nose ring.
Those were the days!
Where can we find your work?
